We are excited to announce the beginning of a competitive division for our area. Please read below for a description of our dual roster competitive program.
HGHA has been approved by OWHA to proceed with a dual-rostered competitive program and/or full competitive program for 2023/24 season. Based on our current numbers the HGHA board anticipates that a dual-roster competitive program would be the most suitable “next-step” towards the implementation of a full competitive program.
WHAT IS DUAL-ROSTER COMPETITIVE?
Dual roster competitive means that a player would be eligible to roster on 2 separate teams (one house league, one competitive team). HGHA would require all players to play on one house league team, players choosing to participate in competitive would be rostered to a 2nd team at the B/C competitive level.
HOW ARE PLAYERS SELECTED FOR THE DUAL-ROSTER COMPETITIVE TEAM?
Players will be required to go through a tryout process.
HGHA players’ first evaluation skate will be on April 15th and 16th in Huntsville.
There will be additional late summer/early fall tryouts to finalize teams.
WHAT PLAY SHOULD I EXPECT ON THE DUAL ROSTER COMPETITIVE TEAM?
Players selected to the competitive team will have one weekly practice with their house league team. Players will be expected to play games with their house league team. Black-out weekends for house league will be established to provide the competitive team opportunity to participate in 3-4 tournaments throughout the season. The competitive team will be allotted 2 additional monthly practices, off-ice workout, and will have the opportunity to participate in provincial playdown games in order to secure a spot for the year end OWHA competitive championship tournament.
WHAT WILL BE THE COST OF DUAL-ROSTER COMPETITIVE TEAM?
The cost will be established based on the number of participants/team. The program will run at cost to families that register to participate in the competitive program. Team may choose to do additional fundraising to offset fees, all fundraising must be approved by the HGHA board
We are very excited to begin this new journey and look forward to growing female hockey in Muskoka!

UPDATE AUGUST 13th 2023
We would like to provide everyone with some more information about our new Dual Roster competitive program (DR)
This year in addition to our house-league (HL) teams, we will have DR competitive teams in both the U13 and U18 divisions.
All HGHA players will be rostered to a house-league team in their own age division, and the house league program will not differ from previous years.
Players of the U11 HL teams are welcome to tryout for the U13 DR team, and players of U15 HL team can try out for the U18 DR team.
The head coach for the U13 DR team is Scott Doughty, and Kerri Vallentin is the head coach for the U18 DR team.
Both Dual Roster teams will practice on Sunday evenings from 6:30-7:30 in Huntsville each week.
For the players that make the DR team after tryouts, the registration cost will be $225. This will cover ice times, socks and reffing fees. Tournament costs (registration and hotels etc) will be additional.
The Dual Roster teams will travel to 2 or 3 tournaments this season. One tournament will be in mid December and the other(s) will be scheduled when the house-league teams do not have games, so potentially over the Christmas holidays or on a March Break weekend.
Dual Roster teams will have the opportunity to qualify for provincials by playing other teams in our region of the same C category. These games will not interfere with the house-league schedule.
Tryouts for these competitive teams are free and will take place on August 26th and 27th in Huntsville.Saturday August 26th 5-6pm U13 tryoutSaturday August 26th 6-7pm U18 tryoutSunday August 27th 5-6pm U13 tryoutSunday August 27th 6-7pm U18 tryoutIf your daughter wishes to try out, and did not select the tryout package on their registration already, please email hgha@hotmail.ca and we will add them to the list.
